About Kapital
1985 · Toshikiyo Hirata
Kapital was founded in 1985 in Kojima, Okayama — Japan's denim mecca — by Toshikiyo Hirata, originally as a wholesale supplier to American denim brands. His son Kiro took the label retail and turned it into the global ambassador for Japanese craft denim: boro (sashiko-stitched scrap quilting), natural indigo dye, repurposed military patterns, looms that haven't been changed since the 70s. Every Kapital piece is dyed and washed dozens of times — what reads as wear is engineered.
