When fabric labels lie — what "100% organic cotton" actually means
Composition labels are not neutral data. They are marketing claims with limited enforcement. Independent fiber tests routinely find more synthetic content than labels claim. Organic cotton certifications were stripped from suppliers covering ~50% of the world's certified organic cotton supply in the 2020 Indian fraud investigation. "Natural" garments — especially jackets, dress shirts, and outerwear — often hide undisclosed polyester linings, PFAS coatings, or formaldehyde resin treatments.

- ·Recycled polyester (rPET) chain-of-custody is notoriously hard to verify; GRS attestation is meaningful, generic "recycled" claims are not.
- ·"100% Cotton" on a jacket usually means 100% cotton face fabric only — the lining, padding, and DWR coating are often synthetic and undisclosed.
- ·"Wrinkle-free" / "non-iron" cotton dress shirts are typically formaldehyde-resin treated, even if the cotton itself is organic.
- ·Look for explicit certifications on the tag: GOTS / OCS for organic cotton; GRS / RCS for recycled fibers; OEKO-TEX Standard 100 for chemical residue testing; bluesign for whole-supply-chain.
