PFAS-free jackets and outerwear
Most synthetic outerwear ships with a PFAS-based DWR (durable water repellent) finish. PFAS are persistent — they don't break down in the body or the environment — and have been linked to thyroid disease, immune dysfunction, and several cancers. The EU is phasing them out under REACH starting 2025.
- ·PFAS-based DWR has been the textile-industry standard since the 1990s. Many "fluorine-free" replacements degrade to PFAS analogues.
- ·Cotton canvas, waxed cotton, wool, and tightly-woven linen all repel light rain without PFAS.
- ·EU REACH Annex XVII restrictions on PFAS in textiles are phasing in 2025–2027.
- ·Look for "PFAS-free", "PFC-free", or natural-fiber outerwear.
